What Colour Goes With Cashmere Kitchen Units? Worktops, Walls, Accents

  • 5 min read

Cashmere is one of the most popular kitchen cabinet colours in the UK, and for good reason. It's softer than pure white, warmer than grey, and works in both modern and classic kitchens. The downside is that it's a tricky colour to pair with. Get the worktop or paint wrong and the cashmere can look washed out or grubby.

We're a kitchen fitting company in Kettering and we've designed plenty of cashmere kitchens. Here's a clear guide to what works alongside cashmere cabinetry, from worktops and wall paint to splashbacks and accent colours.

What is a cashmere kitchen colour?

Cashmere is a warm, off-white or pale creamy beige tone, sometimes described as a soft taupe. It sits between pure white and pale grey, with subtle warmth from a hint of yellow or brown undertones. The exact shade varies between manufacturers, but the family of cashmere colours all share that warm-neutral quality.

What colour goes with cashmere kitchen units?

Cashmere kitchen units pair best with warm neutrals (warm whites, soft greys, taupe), natural wood tones (oak, walnut, ash), and muted accent colours (sage green, navy, dusky pink, brass). Avoid stark cold whites and very cool greys, which clash with cashmere's warm undertone and make the cabinets look dull or grubby.

Worktops for a cashmere kitchen

The worktop is the biggest single decision, because it sits directly against the cabinet doors. The worktop colour either flatters the cashmere or fights it.

Worktops that work well:

  • White quartz with subtle veining. A warm white quartz (not cool, blue-toned white) with light grey or beige veining picks up the warmth of cashmere without being a flat colour match.

  • Marble or marble-effect porcelain. Calacatta and Carrara look-alikes work particularly well. The veining adds visual interest while staying within the warm-neutral palette.

  • Light to mid-grey quartz. Soft warm greys complement cashmere without overpowering. Stay away from cold, blue-grey quartz which clashes.

  • Walnut or oak wood worktops. Natural wood worktops add warmth and texture. Oak suits a more contemporary kitchen; walnut suits a darker, more traditional look.

  • Warm beige or taupe stone. Tonal pairing. The worktop and cabinets sit in the same warm-neutral family for a soft, layered effect.

Worktops to think twice about:

  • Pure white quartz with no veining. Flat and clinical against cashmere. Makes the cabinets look slightly grubby by contrast.

  • Black or very dark stone. Visually heavy. Can work as a contrast piece, but most cashmere kitchens look better with a lighter worktop.

  • Pink-toned granite. Clashes with cashmere's yellow undertone.

If you're still working out the right worktop, our guide to typical kitchen worktop sizes covers the standard depths and heights you'll be working with.

Wall paint colours that complement cashmere

The wall paint surrounds the cabinets and influences how the cashmere reads in the room. Most cashmere kitchens benefit from a slightly warmer paint colour than the cabinets themselves, or a soft accent on a feature wall.

Strong choices:

  • Warm white (Farrow & Ball "Wevet" or "Wimborne White", Little Greene "Slaked Lime"). Brighter than the cashmere itself, so the cabinets don't disappear, while staying in the same warm family.

  • Soft greige (Farrow & Ball "Skimming Stone", Little Greene "French Grey"). A touch warmer than the cashmere, ties the room together.

  • Pale sage or olive (Farrow & Ball "Mizzle", "Lichen"). A muted green that brings warm cashmere to life. Particularly good on a feature wall behind the cooker or sink.

  • Soft navy (Farrow & Ball "Hague Blue", "Stiffkey Blue"). A bold but classic counterpoint to warm cashmere. Best as a feature wall or in a pantry or island position.

  • Dusky pink or plaster (Farrow & Ball "Setting Plaster", "Pink Ground"). The warm undertones of cashmere take pink well. Subtle and on-trend.

Splashback colours for cashmere units

A splashback is a smaller surface, so it can carry a bolder colour than a wall. Splashbacks that work with cashmere:

  • White marble or marble-effect tile. Classic, timeless, ties in with worktops in the same material.

  • Brass or warm metallic. Adds glamour and depth. Particularly effective on a section behind the hob.

  • Soft sage green tile. Zellige or fluted ceramic in muted green. On-trend and warm.

  • Dusky pink tile. Same logic as pink wall paint. Picks up cashmere's warmth.

  • Cream or warm-white tile. A safe choice. Tonal with cashmere, simple, lets the cabinetry be the feature.

Glass splashbacks are also an option in any of the above colours. Easy to clean, no grout lines, but less visually interesting than tile.

Flooring options for a cashmere kitchen

Flooring sits underneath everything else and sets the overall warmth of the room.

  • Oak or warm timber flooring. The natural pairing. Light oak, mid oak or walnut all work. Avoid very dark stained woods which can fight cashmere's softness.

  • Warm beige or taupe porcelain tile. Modern look, durable, hides everyday dirt well. Easy to coordinate with cashmere.

  • Limestone or travertine. Period and traditional kitchens. Slightly more demanding to look after but visually stunning with cashmere.

  • Pale grey porcelain. Works if the grey has warm undertones. Avoid cold, blue-toned grey flooring with cashmere.

Hardware and metalwork

Cabinet handles, taps and light fittings are smaller elements, but they unify the whole kitchen. Hardware finishes that work with cashmere:

  • Brushed brass or antique brass. The natural partner to cashmere. Warm metal, warm cabinet, a perfect tonal match.

  • Copper. A bolder warm metal. Works particularly well in country and farmhouse kitchens.

  • Matte black. A contemporary contrast. Modernises a cashmere kitchen and works well with white worktops.

  • Oil-rubbed bronze. A darker, warmer alternative to black. Good in more traditional kitchens.

Chrome and brushed nickel are usable but feel slightly cold against cashmere. They work in modern kitchens where the contrast is intentional.

Accent colours that work with cashmere

Once the bigger elements are settled, accent colours bring the kitchen to life. Reliable pairings:

  • Sage green in artwork, ceramics, plants or a feature stool.

  • Navy or deep blue in bar stools, light fittings or a single feature wall.

  • Dusky pink or terracotta in soft furnishings and tableware.

  • Mustard or warm yellow in small touches like a pendant light or kitchen accessories.

  • Black as a sharp accent in handles, light fittings or the framing of windows and shelves.

Colours to avoid with cashmere

A few combinations consistently disappoint:

  • Stark, cool white. Makes cashmere look yellowed, dingy, or "off". Particularly noticeable on pure-white worktops or trim.

  • Very cool greys. Blue-toned greys clash with the warmth of cashmere. The room feels uncoordinated even if individual elements look fine in isolation.

  • Bright primary colours. Cashmere is a muted, sophisticated tone. Vivid colours (bright red, electric blue, sharp lemon yellow) overwhelm it.

  • Multiple bold colours together. Cashmere works best with a single accent colour and otherwise neutral surroundings. Mixing navy walls, brass hardware, sage tiles and pink accessories overwhelms the room.
